Which Course Should I Book?

Adult MHFA Half Day Course

The Adult MHFA half day course is an introductory four hour session to raise awareness of mental health.

It is designed to give you:

  • An understanding of what mental health is and how to challenge stigma
  • A basic knowledge of some common mental health issues
  • An introduction to looking after your own mental health and maintaining wellbeing
  • Confidence to support someone in distress or who may be experiencing a mental health issue.

It is ideal for individuals and line managers who want to have a greater understanding of mental health and mental health first aid, or for those who want to know whether they should carry out further training as a an Adult MHFA Champion or Adult Mental Health First Aider.

Adult MHFA One Day Course

The Adult MHFA One Day course qualifies you as an Adult MHFA Champion.

MHFA Champions have:

  • An understanding of common mental health issues
  • Knowledge and confidence to advocate for mental health awareness
  • Ability to spot signs of mental ill health
  • Skills to support positive wellbeing.

It is ideal for those who want the basic skills to help others experiencing mental health problems and to increase mental wellbeing in the workplace, but who do not want to commit to the Adult MHFA Two Day course.

Adult MHFA Two Day Course

The Adult MHFA Two Day course qualifies you as an Adult Mental Health First Aider.

Mental Health First Aiders have:

  • An in depth understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing
  • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues
  • Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress
  • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening
  • Knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to further support – whether that’s self-help resources, through their employer, the NHS, or a mix.

It is ideal for those who want a thorough grounding in mental health first aid, who want the confidence of having studied the topic in greater depth than the one day course, and who want to have more time to put the skills taught into practical scenarios.

Adult MHFA Refresher Course

The Adult MHFA Refresher course is a four hour update session for those who have previously qualified as a Mental Health First Aider (via the two day course) or Mental Health First Aid Champion (via the one day course).

It is designed to allow you to:

  • Keep your awareness of mental health support current
  • Update your knowledge of mental health and what influences it
  • Practice applying the Mental Health First Aid action plan.

This course is ideal for previously qualified Mental Health First Aiders or Mental Health First Aid Champions who want to refresh their skills and remain confident that they will be able to provide support to those who are experiencing a mental health crisis.

MHFA England recommend that MHFA First Aiders and Champions refresh their skills every three years.

Youth MHFA Two Day Course

The Youth MHFA Two Day course qualifies you as a Youth Mental Health First Aider.

Youth Mental Health First Aiders have:

  • An in depth understanding of young people’s mental health and factors that affect wellbeing
  • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues
  • Confidence to reassure and support a young person in distress
  • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening
  • Knowledge to help a young person recover their health by guiding them to further support – whether that’s through self-help sites, their place of learning, the NHS, or a mix – engaging with parents, carers and external agencies where appropriate
  • Ability to support a young person with a long term mental health issue or disability to thrive
  • Tools to look after your own mental wellbeing.

It is ideal for those who work with children and young people (aged 8 to 18) who want a thorough grounding in mental health first aid, who want the confidence of having studied the topic in greater depth than the one day course, and who want to have more time to put the skills taught into practical scenarios.
